Badung regional government to re-evaluate environmental impact of shifting sand from Geger beach of Nusa Dua to Kuta beach. The Badung regional government in Bali has acquiesced to community demands and, at least temporarily, halted sand dredging activities off Nusa Dua’s Geger Beach. As reported on balidiscovery.com , an ocean-going dredger has been working over the past days moving bottom sand from Nusa Dua to the badly eroded beaches of Kuta.

Responding to complaints from Nusa Dua investors and local environmental groups who feared the current dredging program would prove only to provide short term relief to Kuta’s beaches at the expense of accelerating the erosion of the beaches in the popular resort area of Nusa Dua, the government company undertaking the project has been told to stop work until further evaluation can be conducted.

The local environmental watchdog group WALHI has strongly criticized the beach reclamation project, claiming the required environmental impact study was inadequate and did not meet the strict requirements of the international funding provided by the Japanese government.
