1930’s Bali Film Played in Ubud

Six movies, which shots taken in Bali in 1930, would be played once again before Ubud community, the cultural town of Gianyar Bali on July 1-3 2010.

“The movies told about old Balinese life is carried out due to the cooperation with one cultural institution in France,” said General Manager Hotel Amandari Kedewatan Ubud, Liv Gussing who is also the committee of that screening In Ubud Bali, on Sunday.

Accompanied by Patrick Bensard, a director for one of cultural institution in France, the institution who has collection of old movies from different countries, including Bali, explained that through playing the old movies he hopes that the movies could give more wisdom for Balinese.

“The movies at least will remind Balinese about how their old ancestor holding and preserving ancient cultural art,” he said.

That old movies screening will be held at Wantilan Pura Desa Kedewatan. During those three days, every night there will be two movies played starting from 07.00 a.m. to 09.00 p.m.

“The movie played freely, open for public. Balinese, especially people in Ubud hoped could spare their time watching over the documenter movies contained historical values,” said Liv Gussing who proposed the idea of entertaining community around his hotel, the area where he develops his business.

Among them, there is one entitle “Goena-Goena” which its shots taken in Ubud area 70 years ago.

That film sponsored by Netherland Tourism Department as they promoting Bali in their country.

The film conveyed Balinese daily life at that time, the film also had been played in varied countries around the world and recorded could attract worldwide attention.

Among those movies, some illustrated Ubud and Balinese people who are diligent and tenacious in agriculture. It shown through their plowing activity used traditional plow pulled by two cows.

People of that time also never left their old heritage as for art world such as dances as well as traditional musical instrument, tetabuhan.

In one scene, there is a girl who still used mud powder, full of live and energy followed the dancing movement taught by one instructor with gamelan music accompanied their dance.

Watching the initial screening of that movie, some viewers, most of them are art observer, were get stunned.

The problem is the differences of girls of that time with girl nowadays in term of their dress code. Girl in the past did not use anything to cover their upper body. Though, said by Wayan Yuniartha, an art observer, that scene have nothing to do with pornographic scene and did not have to arouse lust.

“It was naturalist and part of the fact of that time so how can we could not generalize it with pornographic,” he assured.
